A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

25          Sun. Really had a sleep … until 9.30. We all went to Sunday School. Had another sleep, but was lonesome for Keith. He was only downstairs. I felt pretty low tonight though. Guess I was wishing someone would come, & thought Dot & Marge might be up home. We all went to Church, and to Ben Olivers after. Busses were there too. I felt more like crying than going to sleep, & didn’t until almost 12.

26          Mon. Still felt touchy this morn, but Keith asked us to go to Weyburn at 3.30 so we all did. Shopped, had supper at Comm. & went to show. “You Were Meant For Me” with Dan Daily and Jeanne Crain. Very good. Called in home & had lunch. We 3 sang all the way home then I played a tune and feel happy as a lark.

27          Tues. I did some mending and odd jobs this morn while Margaret ironed. I carried on until 4 this aft. Mother & Marg went in to Colgate. Brought me a cone home. We all went berry picking tonight. Got into a real good patch and got a pail full. Home about ten. I woke up with tooth ache in the middle of the night.

28          Wed. Keith told me to stay in bed awhile so I didn’t get up until 8.45. Linda phoned and wanted help, so Mother went this aft. We worked real hard all morn, & I stayed at it pretty steady this aft. We cleaned the eggs tonight. I couldn’t get to sleep again tonight with the toothache.

29          Thurs. Accomplished a good deal today. Finally got my dress hem turned up. Tried to sleep this aft & again after supper, but as soon as I lie down it aches. I am dead tired. Mother came back home tonight. I took aspirin and hot water bottle to bed. Still awake after one.

30          Fri. Keith took me to Weyburn this morning, I went to Dr. Allan who froze and pulled my tooth. It didn’t hurt much. We came to Mom’s for dinner & called in at Bowditches on way home. Saw Mrs. Bowditch, Helen & Ronnie. Folks want us to take them to Manitoba. I gave the vanity a coat of oil this aft. Marg & Dad were in Regina all day. Everyone went to Calf Club Special tonight. I stayed home, bathed & prepared for tomorrow. Feel worn out so went to bed early.

31          Sat. Keith & I went to Weyburn this morn. Had dinner, & after rounding up our cement, picked up Dad, Mom & Shirley, and left for Manitoba about 2 o’clock. Got as far as Holland at ten o’clock, so stopped there and got a Hotel Room. Stayed over night. Had supper in Souris, which is a very pretty town. Sleep about 11.30.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
