A Week in Lorraine’s Diary

4            Sun. We all went to Sunday School this morn & brought Aunt Mary home with us for dinner. Keith & I lay down, but I didn’t sleep. We went in to Church tonight & had communion. Saw in the Manse, then came home & had lunch. Late to Bed. Heat Terrible

5            Mon. Sleepy, but we were both very happy. Mother & I washed this morning. Marg gave her a Toni Permanent. I did a few things then lay down and had a wonderful sleep on the front room floor. Keith went in to Lodge tonight, but was home shortly after ten. I turned up a dress while he was away.

6            Tues. I ironed this morning. Keith, Marg & I went to Weyburn this aft. We saw the show “Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!” in technicolor, Lou McAllister & June Haver. It was grand. Then we went to Weyburn Fair. Had supper with the folks. We girls then had some good rides. Ferris Wheel, Tilt a Whirl, Octopus & saw motorcycle side show. Grandstand was very good. Had grand time.

7            Wed. Did some more ironing this morn. Margaret went to work in the Co-op Store. Lay down a few min. this aft. Didn’t sleep. Marg was home for half-day, and sewed. There was a shower for us in I.O.O.F. Hall tonight in Colgate. It was just lovely. Two girls from U.S. danced and sang, we received $30.25 as well as gifts. Keith & I both made speeches. Folks were down. Storm came up but we didn’t get much rain.

8            Thurs. I wrote four more letters this aft. Keith & Dad went to bring cattle home tonight, Marg went to show. I helped Mother with her Ladies Aid Cash, and cleaned eggs. Also practiced for a good while. Was head tired so came to bed shortly after 10.30. Art Woodwork & Joe Walker came just before dinner & stayed part of this aft. Had a grand visit.

9            Fri. Mother left for Regina this morn to help Dorothy. Margaret still working. I cooked my first roast. Turned out very well. Men haying. Gathered & cleaned eggs this aft. We all went into town to hear the Eckhart Bros. Bell-ringers. The show was wonderful, & comical. It is the best thing I have seen in years.

10          Sat. I drove Margaret into Colgate this morn. Made some pastry, washed & waxed floor, dusted etc. Keith & I got the eggs ready then went to Weyburn about four. Had supper, shopped together and went to the show “Cass Timberlane” with Spencer Tracey & Lana Turner. Very good. Called in at Moms on the way home.

These are the diaries of a seventeen-year-old teenager from a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Her name is Lorraine. She eventually was a church organist in Colgate. In 1944 she was the piano player for a dance band in Weyburn. In these days before school busses she, and her sisters, each had to move from the farm into town to attend school for Grades 11 & 12. This is the darkest time in World War II. Weyburn hosted an airbase for BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). In other words, the town is filled with eligible young airmen from all over the world …
