Our involvement with Amway had some interesting side-effects on my life. A huge one for me was to deal with my fear of using the telephone to directly contact prospects. This skill grew useful in SaskTel International as I set up sales calls to decision makers in the large U.S. Telcos. I further developed the skills during my short stint at Magnum House and then went on to establish a huge Canadian market for the services of our own Ben Graham Group.

MARTENS was a highly successful project by all measurements. SaskTel took the unusual step of hosting a recognition event for the entire team! Spouses were included at the party!

Another aspect of Amway was sales conferences in attractive locations. Our family went to Pittsburgh for this one.
The confluence of the Allegany and Monongahela Rivers to form the Ohio River.
While we were in sessions Craig, Michael and James went across the bridge to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates.
We are standing in front of our hotel looking at the confluence of the Three Rivers. When we were in sessions the kids were doing elevator races in the hotel.
A few hours later our vacationing family pulled into a campground in Ohio at 11:00 pm and put up our tent while the kids swam in the pool.

September

I’ve noticed periods when there are few or no pictures. These are usually times when something dramatic is going on. In 1988 I made several sales trips, across the continent, with SaskTel International, including destinations like Atlanta and Dallas. In mid-September, as my boss and I were on the runway leaving Dallas, I gave him my resignation. I loved the travel; I hated doing it without family.
